Burns Night Supper Craft

Every year on the 25th of January people in Scotland and across the world celebrate Burns Night.

It is celebrated because the famous Scottish poet and song writer, called Robert Burns, was born on this day. Robert Burns wrote lots of famous poems and songs with his most famous song being Auld Lang Syne. A song that is sung on New Year's Eve by people from all over the world!

It is tradition to host a Burns Night Supper to celebrate Burns Night where a classic smoked fish soup and the essential haggis, neeps and tatties are served. To celebrate Burns Night this year we have a lovely thistle you can make with your child and use it as a table decoration at your Burns Night Supper, be it a real one or a pretend play feast!

All your need to make yours is some green and purple card, scissors, glue and a wooden lolly stick.

If you haven’t got any coloured card you can use green and purple felt tip pens to colour white paper or card instead.

Start by colouring in your wooden lolly stick with a green felt tip pen then leave to dry.

Next, cut your purple card into small squares as shown in our example. Then carefully cut small strips along each square to create the top part of your thistle.

Fold your green card in half and draw the leaf and base of your thistle onto one half as shown in our example. Carefully cut out the leaf and thistle base and unfold.

Finally, stick all pieces onto your stem using double-sided tape or glue. Then all your need to do is pop your Burns Night decoration into a small vase and get ready to celebrate! We used the wooden cup from The Tender Leaf Fruity Blender play food set. For more play food inspiration check out these from our Kitchen and Shopping Collection:
